Senior or Principal Public Transport Planner

Country Location: Auckland, New Zealand or Brisbane, Australia

About this role

We are seeking an enthusiastic public transport planner to join our team in Auckland or Brisbane, and be an integral part of our growth as we seek to make a difference to the cities and communities around us. Based in our Auckland or Brisbane office, you will assist on projects both locally and throughout New Zealand and Australia. We will offer a competitive salary commensurate with your skills and experience. As an independent, staff-owned company, our workplace culture supports flexible working arrangements (including part-time roles) and the open sharing of ideas on how to continually improve the services we offer.

About you

You are a public transport professional who is looking to take the next step in their career. Maybe you want to break away from the stifling environment of a large international consultancy, or maybe you're looking to step outside of the confines of the public sector; no matter what your background, we offer opportunities and flexibility that few of our competitors can match. But first, you will have to meet this list of basic criteria. We know it's long, but we value our current team and it is really important to us that we hire the right person to join us.

  • You'll need at least three years' professional experience in passenger transit planning. This includes:
    • Network planning, understanding the ridership versus coverage trade-offs;
    • Public transport infrastructure design;
    • Operational planning, including timetabling and scheduling; and/or
    • Fares policy and ticketing systems.
  • Previous experience in a consultancy environment, especially in the Auckland market, will be well regarded.
  • If you haven't worked in a consulting role before, that's ok as long as you are aware of how consulting works: being dedicated to producing quality outcomes for our clients, within budget and project timeframes.
  • You will hold tertiary qualifications in an appropriate technical field, which might be engineering, urban/town planning, geography or something else we haven't thought of yet.
  • You might be a technologically savvy person with added skills in the areas of data analysis, spatial analysis (GIS), transport modelling or graphic design. We like people with extra skills, so if you have them, tell us about them.
  • You'll be expected to assist on projects throughout New Zealand and Australia, and possibly internationally. This may require occasional business travel. Having the ability to travel and work freely in Australia and New Zealand will be well regarded.
  • You'll have to work collaboratively and collegiately; with our staff, our project partners and our clients.
  • And finally, you will most definitely need to be able to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbally. This one's important.

About applying

If you've read everything above and think this is the job for you, please get in touch. We want to know all about you, so a well written cover letter is essential: tell us about your experiences, your passions, your goals and what it is you will bring to our team. So get inspired, get writing, and email your letter and latest CV to us here at auckland@mrcagney.com.

About this role

We are seeking an enthusiastic urban transport professional to join our team in Melbourne, and be an integral part of our growth as we seek to make a difference to the cities and communities around us. Based in our Melbourne office, you will assist on projects both within Victoria and throughout Australia and New Zealand.

As member of our consultant team, you will be involved in all aspects of our business with responsibilities including business development, marketing, bid preparation and project management.

We offer a competitive salary commensurate with skills and experience. As an independent, staff-owned company, our workplace culture supports flexible working arrangements (including part-time roles) and the open sharing of ideas on how to continually improve the services we offer.

About You

You are a transport professional who is looking to take the next big step in their career. Maybe you want to break away from the stifling environment of a large international consultancy, want to work on exciting sustainable transport projects across Australia and New Zealand or work with a team that is genuinely trying to make a positive difference. No matter what your background, we offer opportunities and flexibility that few of our competitors can match.

You will work in our Melbourne office within the Transport Strategy, Transport Planning and Urban Strategy practice areas. You are passionate about your work and making a difference in the community, you are motivated, and you enjoy working in a collaborative environment.

You might have a few years' professional experience, or you could be a graduate beginning your career. Regardless of experience, you are a person who revels in the chance to apply their technical capabilities and powers of critical reasoning to help us shape a better world.

Following is a list of attributes for which we are looking—we recognise this is a long list, and do not expect any single candidate to satisfy every item. We have several "must haves" and a list of attributes that would be "looked upon favourably".

You must have the following attributes:

Experience in transport engineering or planning, urban planning or design, or a similar urban built environment field;
Ability to work collaboratively and collegially within diverse project teams, with staff, with clients, and with stakeholders;
Ability to communicate effectively in English;
Strong writing and report preparation abilities;
Basic numeracy skills and ability to use Microsoft Excel;
Strong presentation skills and confidence to present to clients and stakeholder groups;
Knowledge of how transport contributes to making better towns and cities; and

If you have the following attributes, these will be viewed favourably, but are not essential:

Experience working within the Victorian transport and urban planning context;
Experience working in transport planning;
Design-related experience within urban design or landscape architecture;
Skills in mapping and illustration using the Adobe Creative Suite;
Skills in spatial data analysis (GIS);
Skills using design software such as SketchUp or AutoCAD;
Experience in consulting;
Ability to travel and work freely on projects across Australia and New Zealand.

About Applying

Please submit your CV and cover letter to melbourne@mrcagney.com by 7 August 2017.
