As part of a consortium led by Transpo Group, MRCagney developed a staged twenty year plan for the bus-based public transport system in the city of Al Ain, located in the United Arab Emirates. Considering all aspects of the city's public transport needs, the plan provides recommendations for the incremental improvement of their current bus network, enabling them to achieve their vision of a network of BRT corridors connecting key centres.
The study was initially focused on four previously identified potential BRT corridors, and seven hub locations where multi-modal transport interchanges will be built including a major underground train station in the CBD which will incorporate rail, BRT, local bus, long distance coaches, taxis and cyclists. To clarify the role of BRT within the wider transit network, our team led a redesign of the city’s future bus network for 2030, following a more hierarchical approach to bus network planning that laid out a proposed network of high-frequency ‘Pre-BRT’ routes that connected major centres (current and planned), supported by local bus services that provided transfer opportunities at key locations. The intention is that the Pre-BRT routes will eventually increase in frequency and demand to the point where bus priority infrastructure in the form of segregated median BRT lanes can be justified, creating an Open BRT system.
Concept designs for 18km of median BRT in inner-city areas were developed, including variations based on the different road corridor widths. A series of station designs were developed, each offering a different balance of capacity, priority and physical footprint.
A system of warrants were developed to assist in determining when each section of BRT corridor would be justified for construction, based on passenger demand, bus frequency and prevalent traffic congestion.
MRCagney also provided best practice advice on the Complete Streets principles that encompass the integrated multi-modal planning required to shape the city's CBD into an attractive, connected and pedestrian friendly environment.
