Principal or Senior Economist

Country Location: Auckland, New Zealand

At MRCagney we work on some of the most interesting sustainable transport projects in Aotearoa, with the team sharing a sense of purpose to make a positive, sustained contribution to the people and communities we work with.

Economics plays a vital role in our projects, whether it is understanding wider costs and benefits, providing a critical perspective, or supporting a compelling narrative.

We are looking for someone to join our team to provide this perspective to transformational projects and strategies to ensure positive change.

About us

MRCagney is one of the leading sustainable transport consultancies in Aotearoa and we apply a ‘people-first’ approach to the places where we work. We believe that sustainable transport is about people, not just numbers, and we provide pragmatic, real-world advice that our clients can follow with confidence.

With our business recently becoming owned and operated by members of our senior team we are excited about the next stage of our growth. We have offices in Auckland and Hamilton and our services range from strategy and policy consulting through to data analytics, technical transport and urban design.

MRCagney is an incredible place to work as we can put our ideas into practice and work on exciting and transformational projects. This is shown through some of our work, which includes:

  • National Policy Statement on Urban Development Capacity
  • ‘Access for Everyone’ - a first of its kind strategy that reshapes transport circulation, street design, and street operations in Auckland’s city centre.
  • City Rail Link
  • Sustainable Transport Strategy and Plans for Kāinga Ora to integrate land use and transport.
  • Auckland Light Rail
  • Let’s Get Wellington Moving – Golden Mile Project –the creation of transit mall that speeds up buses while freeing up space for people.
  • Auckland’s New Network - Redesign of Auckland’s bus, rail and ferry system, with the goal of developing a single integrated network

The role

This role works across many of our projects to apply critical reasoning and an economic lens, which support the case for proposed solutions. With economics being a key component of our projects, this is a vital role where your expertise will be sought after and valued – both by the team and clients alike.

The role will be tailored to the right person, but may cover areas such as:

  • Strategic policy advice.
  • Business cases for transport investments;
  • Economic analysis of transport and land use policies;
  • Innovative models for delivering transport infrastructure & services;
  • Benchmarking of transport and land use outcomes; and
  • Transportation pricing and policy reforms.

About you

You are an Economist who is passionate about the way economics can support the case for sustainable transport. It could be that you have gained experience within a public organisation and are ready to share your expertise with other organisations as a consultant. Or it could be that you are with a larger consultancy and are ready to play a bigger part within a more agile and collaborative organisation. As a guide, we are looking for the following:

Relevant experience as a transport or spatial economist
Tertiary qualifications in an appropriate technical field, which might be in economics, finance or a related discipline.
Strong qualitative and quantitative assessment skills, and the ability to scrutinise your own work.
Knowledge of econometric (e.g. R) and/or GIS (e.g. QGIS) software and/or programming skills, (e.g. Python or Ruby) will be viewed favourably.
A technologically savvy person with added skills in the areas of data analysis, or spatial analysis (GIS). We like people with extra skills, so if you have them, tell us about them.
The ability to work collaboratively and collegially with our staff, our project partners and our clients.
Aware of the commercial nature of consulting, which means being dedicated to producing quality outcomes for our clients, within budget and project timeframes. Previous experience in a consultancy environment, especially in the Auckland market, will be well regarded.
And finally, you will most definitely need to be able to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbally. This one’s important.

Diversity is valuable to us as it brings further understanding into the different communities in which we work. Therefore, if you bring a different lens, or have a background that enables you to challenge our views, we welcome that.

Why this role?

If you are someone who revels in the chance to apply your technical capabilities and powers of critical reasoning to help us shape a better world then this role is for you.

As an independent consultancy, we encourage you to be innovative, try new things and explore areas of interest – the opportunities are endless. We will support you to do your best work, become an expert practitioner and grow your personal band.

We are outcomes focussed, value a work/life balance, and flexibility is our norm. Our values are shared and lived from the top, actively guiding the company’s decisions, and we have a real desire to make a difference in Aotearoa. Our team care about people and support each other as we work towards making a positive difference.

The role

With our New Zealand business recently becoming owned and operated by members of our senior team, we are excited about the next stage of our growth.

This role is about putting sustainable transport strategy into practice. You will be driving projects from start to finish, bringing client organisations along on the journey, helping develop strategy, and managing complex operational and practical elements of transport projects.  You could be working on implementing strategic change, public transport operations, planned major disruptions, coordinating systems integration or something completely new! This really is a diverse and busy role.

Working closely with our Principal Consultant, you will be handed responsibility for projects, be a key point of contact for clients and contractors, prepare reports and ensure stakeholders are communicated with and kept informed. Support and guidance will be available to you, and it’s your soft skills that will see you grow into and succeed in this role.

About you

You will be an intermediate or senior level consultant who shares our passion that sustainable transport is a powerful way to address complex issues. You will also:

  • Work collaboratively, drawing on the technical skills already within MRCagney. As such, having some understanding of sustainable transport disciplines would be extremely helpful, but we are open to this.
  • Thrive on project management – you have an ability to ‘make things happen’, are a strong communicator and understand where to provide support – and when.

Diversity is valuable to us as it brings further understanding into the different communities in which we work. Therefore, if you bring a different lens, or have a background that enables you to challenge our views, we welcome that.

Why this role?

You will be a valued part of a highly passionate, yet practical team and collaborate and learn from people with diverse skills and experiences. You will get to be involved in a wide range of projects and that are regarded as best international practice, and work closely with clients, stakeholders and community groups.

We are outcomes focussed, value work/life balance and flexibility is our norm. Our values are shared and lived from the top, actively guiding the company’s decisions. We have a real desire to make a real difference to Aotearoa and are forward thinking with our approach.

Our team care about people, support each other and we want you to do your best work.
