Affordability in New Zealand

A visualization of affordability of rental accommodation in various regions of New Zealand

scroll

Affordability in New Zealand is an open-source visualization we created to inform the public about rental accommodation affordability in various regions of New Zealand. For example, you and your partner, if you have one, just got a job in Auckland. Now where to live? The visualization color codes Auckland's area units by their affordability to you.

Here affordability is based on rent, commute, parking, and car ownership cost estimates determined by your answers to various questions and from New Zealand's 2013 census data. After choosing your parameters, you can then hover over any area unit to bring up a detailed cost breakdown for that area. Using the visualization, you can explore different scenarios and quickly appreciate the multifactorial nature of affordability, that is not simply about rent to income ratio.
