In 2023, MRCagney developed the Surface Access Strategy for Auckland International Airport Limited, providing a long-term framework for how passengers, employees and visitors will access the airport as the precinct grows.
Our work began by assessing future demand across the airport transport network and identifying where existing and planned provision would fall short. We worked with Auckland Airport to establish ambitious mode share targets and developed strategic networks for each transport mode across the airport precinct.
To support these targets, we identified a programme of physical and non-physical interventions to be delivered over a 30-year period. The Strategy provided a staged pathway for improving access while supporting Auckland Airport’s significant programme of future development.
Collaboration was central to the work. We facilitated two workshops with key internal stakeholders across Auckland Airport. The first built a shared understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the precinct, while the second focused on priorities, sequencing and the staging of interventions needed to support the Airport’s development programme.
Following completion of the Strategy, Auckland Airport commissioned MRCagney to undertake further work on the public transport interventions it had identified. This developed a robust evidence base to support Auckland Airport’s engagement with Auckland Transport on future public transport network changes needed to serve the airport precinct.
