Sydney Airport 20-Year Ground Transport Strategy

MRCagney developed the Sydney Airport Ground Transport Strategy, a long-term framework for how passengers, workers, freight and other airport users will travel to, from and around the airport as it grows.

The Strategy considers ground transport as an integrated system spanning public transport, roads, kerbside operations, parking, active transport, freight and commercial transport, all competing for space within a highly constrained operating environment.

The Strategy modelled the traffic impacts of forecast passenger growth to understand the constraints of the existing transport networks. This was used to develop mode shift initiatives to encourage more use of public transport particularly for airport workers.

The Strategy identified focus areas covering how to make better use of existing transport assets, improve network performance, support a wider range of travel choices and guide future infrastructure investment.

A key part of the Strategy was recognising that airport ground transport does not operate in isolation. Access to Sydney Airport depends on strong connections with the wider metropolitan transport network and close collaboration with government, transport agencies, councils, operators and other partners.

The Strategy provides Sydney Airport with a practical roadmap for decision-making over the next two decades, and provides critical inputs to the terminal expansion and land side construction programme.

Overall, the work established a long-term direction for a ground transport network that can support airport growth while maintaining reliable access, operational efficiency, customer experience and resilience.
